Winfred Yavi of Bahrain is the women’s 3,000 steeplechase champion

In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi trailed world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech for all but one circuit before passing the Kenyan over the final 400 metres to win gold on Sunday at the World Athletics Championships.

Yavi, 23, won the race by finishing in the fourth-fastest time ever (8 minutes, 54.29 seconds), while Chepkoech, 32, took second place (8 minutes, 58.98 seconds).

Kenyan athlete Faith Cherotich, 19, won bronze in a personal-best time of 9:00.69 to become the first adolescent to stand on the global medal podium in the history of the sport.
