On Sunday, the season-ending Eugene Diamond League meet came to a successful conclusion with Gudaf Tsegay shattering the women’s 5,000-meter world record and Armand Duplantis setting a new standard in the men’s pole vault.
To win in 14 minutes 00.21 seconds, Ethiopian Tsegay established a fast pace from the off. She ran the final few metres to thunderous applause, shaving about five seconds off the previous record held by Kenyan Faith Kipyegon. Shortly after she entered her name into the history books, Sweden’s Duplantis, who had just won his second world championship title in Budapest weeks before, broke the world record seven times by leaping over 6.23 metres.
Duplantis said he would attempt to enjoy the experience rather than become concentrated on his prospects of winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games. He cleared a centimetre higher than his previous best on the first try.
