Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh secure silver in Men’s Rowing Lightweight Double Sculls

With a silver in the men’s lightweight double sculls at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat gave India its first medal of the competition. Chinese rowers Fan Junjie and Sun Man quickly took the lead in the men’s lightweight double sculls race, and by the 500-meter point of the 2000-meter race, they were far ahead. Starting in the outside lane, Arvind and Arjun maintained good pace and appeared to be coming up with the leaders around the 1000m mark (midway), when they had cut the gap to 1.80 seconds and were closely followed by Uzbekistan and Japan. Fan and Sun put the pedal to the metal in the latter stages of the race, moving comfortably ahead to take fifth place, 5.02 seconds later. However, the Indians’ pursuit was made evident by the fact that they were 5.14 seconds faster than Uzbek athletes Shakhzod Nurmatov and Sobirjon Safaroliyev. For a number of years now, Arvind and Arjun have led Indian rowing. The team’s 11th-place finish in Tokyo 2020 was the best ever for India in Olympic rowing. After a brief break following this, they were forced to separate since Arjun gained weight, which meant their total weight was too high for the doubles event.
