In the Cricket World Cup, South Africa destroyed England by 229 runs, sending the embattled reigning champions packing early following their most recent humiliation.
England suffered their third defeat in four games this past Saturday, having already lost to Afghanistan and, shockingly, New Zealand.
The Proteas, who were set to bat in oppressive Mumbai conditions, recovered from their own unexpected defeat – against the Netherlands on Tuesday – to score 399-7. Marco Jansen scored an undefeated 75 off 42 balls, while Heinrich Klaasen (109) hammered a century off 61 balls.
In reply, England fell to 38-4 in 8.1 overs and were bowled out for 170 in just 22 overs.
The Proteas registered the second-highest total in the event thanks to 151 points scored by Klaasen and Jansen, who exploited England’s pace and spin. In New Delhi, South Africa also defeated Sri Lanka with the highest score of 428-5.
England suffered their biggest defeat by runs in ODI history as they were removed with 28 overs remaining after giving up their highest total ever.
After fellow countryman Aiden Markram’s century off 48 balls against Sri Lanka, Klaasen scored his first World Cup century and fourth century overall. It was also the second fastest century in the tournament. In total, he scored 12 fours and 4 sixes.
With six points, the decisive victory solidifies South Africa’s third place. England dropped to ninth position in the standings, level with Afghanistan in last place with two points.
