The Olympic Torch Relay, an ancient tradition, continues its trip to Paris in 2024, with the torch crossing the Mediterranean and embarking on a 68-day adventure throughout France. Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist and an IOC Athletes’ Commission member, is one of the 11,000 torchbearers selected to carry the iconic symbol. Following its ceremonial lighting at Olympia, Greece, on April 16, the Olympic flame will travel to Athens before sailing for Marseille on the Belem, a historic three-masted ship. This unique means of transportation has special significance since it echoes the ancient custom of carrying competitors and officials to the Games by sea.
The French Torch Relay begins on May 8, when the flame arrives in Marseille. Over the next 68 days, it will travel throughout 65 regions, carried by 11,000 torchbearers from various origins and groups. This statewide festival strives to unite the entire country in the spirit of the Games.
