Hideki Matsuyama won the Genesis Invitational by three strokes on Sunday in Pacific Palisades, California, after shooting a bogey-free 9-under 62, one shy of tying the course record at Riviera Country Club.
The Japanese pro started the day six strokes behind Patrick Cantlay, but he quickly moved up the leaderboard with three birdies at holes 1-3, 10-12, and 15-17. He reached the clubhouse at 17-under 267 for the week, and no one in the pack of remaining contenders could catch up. Matsuyama, 31, had not won on tour since January 2022 and had dropped to No. 55 in the Official World Golf Rankings. The 2021 Masters remains his career highlight, but by winning the season’s third flagship event, Matsuyama receives $4 million and 700 FedEx Cup points.
Will Zalatoris had his most successful week after returning from an extended hiatus following back surgery. Zalatoris led at one time at 15 under, but went 1 over for his next five holes to score a 69 and tie for second with Luke List (68) at 14 under.
