All England Championship: Sindhu qualifies second round

PV is a double Olympic medallist. Sindhu advanced to the second round of the women’s singles competition, while HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth failed in the first round of the men’s singles at the All England Championships. World No. 11 Sindhu, a previous world champion, won the first game 21-10, but her German opponent, world No. 26 Li Yvonne Li, retired, allowing the Indian to advance to the next round.

The 28-year-old from Hyderabad is poised to play top seed Korean An Se Young, who has defeated her six matches in international badminton.

In fact, Sindhu has only managed to steal a game away from the world’s top Korean when they met.  Sindhu and Li appeared to be battling at 4-4, but the Indians quickly pulled away for an 11-7 lead at the break. She expanded the advantage without any fuss.

Li eventually dumped a flick serve into the net, giving Sindhu 11 game chances and converting when the German went long.
