A day after dominating to win the sprint race, Max Verstappen extended his lead in the world championship on Sunday by winning the first Chinese Grand Prix in five years. For the first time since 2019, the three-time world champion dominated the race when it returned to the Shanghai International Circuit, finishing 13.7 seconds clear of Lando Norris of McLaren and his Red Bull colleague Sergio Perez in third.
After a late change to new tyres, Fernando Alonso earned the bonus for the quickest lap on the 5.451-kilometer track outside of the Chinese megacity, denying him a 100% points-scoring weekend.
Verstappen added a fourth grand prix victory to his sprint win of the season with another all-conquering performance. Verstappen is rushing towards a fourth consecutive world championship, and the only thing standing in his way in 2024 was a clean sweep of all five races—a rare brake failure in Melbourne.
