Germany’s Lea Friedrich set a new world record in the 200-meter flying lap during the Olympic women’s cycling sprint qualifiers at the National Velodrome. The previous record of 10.154 seconds, set by Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell during the Tokyo Olympics in Bolivia, was broken several times in one day.
New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews, who won the keirin gold medal, was the first to break the record with a time of 10.108 seconds. Friedrich then lowered it further to 10.029 seconds. Britain’s current world champion, Emma Finucane, also beat the previous record, qualifying second-fastest with a time of 10.067 seconds.
