It’s the end of group matches and time for the knockouts in round of 16 stage
The group matches of the FIFA World Cup 2022 have concluded. It’s now time for the round of 16 stage. In the first phase, eight groups were created out of the 32 participating teams. They spanned from Group A to Group H. As per the tournament norms, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16. This marks the beginning of the knockout stages. It features a single-headed round robin format.
France, the defending champions, became the first team to reach the Round of 16 after winning both their group matches. They defeated Australia 4-1. Les Bleus defeated Denmark.
The Netherlands’ campaign has emerged as the highly rated team from Group A, making its place in the round of 16. Thanks to the efforts of Cody Gakpo, Netherlands gained success in the initial phase.
The winner of Group B, England, won the top spot in group. It has two victories and a draw to its credit. Next, Christian Pulisic’s goal in the key championship match against Iran has been of immense help top the USA men’s football team, which has also progressed to the next level.
Brazil won its opening two games to qualify for the next stage. The success came to Brazil despite the team playing without its star player Neymar, who is out due to injury. After defeating Ghana 3-2 and Uruguay 3-2, Portugal—spearheaded to success by Cristiano Ronaldo—has also progressed from Group G. Lionel Messi-led Argentina recovered from a shocking loss to Saudi Arabia and managed to move ahead from Group C. Poland came in second place in Group C. It managed to hold off a serious challenge from Mexico.
