New York City sets world record for largest marathon

With 55,646 racers crossing the finish line in Central Park, the New York City Marathon shattered the record for the largest marathon in the world, according to the event’s organisers. That surpassed the previous record set during the September Berlin Marathon, which saw 54,280 runners complete the World Marathon Major.

With 24,731 female finishers, the five-borough event had the highest number of women ever, according to organisers, as more amateur runners in the US take up distance running. Sheila Chepkirui led a Kenyan sweep of the women’s podium, while Dutchman Abdi Nageeye took first place in the men’s event.
