Ex-Brazil and Real Madrid defender Marcelo announces retirement

Former Brazil and Real Madrid defender Marcelo, 36, has announced his retirement from football. Marcelo played for Real Madrid from 2007 to 2022, departing as the club’s most decorated player with 25 trophies, including five Champions League titles, six LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, and three European Super Cups.

At the international level, he earned 58 caps for Brazil, winning the Confederations Cup in 2013. He also secured a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics and a bronze at the 2008 edition.

Marcelo’s last club was Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense, where he began his youth and professional career. He won the Copa Libertadores in 2023 before mutually parting ways with the club in November.
