Germany defeated Morocco 6-0 on Monday at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium to get off to a quick start in their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign. Germany’s captain Alexandra Popp scored twice in the victory.
At the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the two-time winners had only lost one of their previous 24 group-stage games, and debutants Morocco never seemed to have a chance to double that pitiful total.
Morocco was down 1-0 as early as the 11th minute when Germany’s captain Popp scored with a brilliantly placed header for Germany to go up 2-0 shortly before halftime.
In the first minute of the second half, Klara Buhl scored. Then, as Germany tightened their hold, two clumsy own goals were followed by a late Lea Schuller goal that completed the victory in injury time, adding salt to Morocco’s wounds.
