Asian Games champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam led India’s dominance at the ongoing Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai on Saturday, winning a spectacular hat-trick of gold medals thanks to her extraordinary mental toughness.
In a close shoot-off match, World No. 3 Jyothi prevailed over tournament leader Andrea Becerra of Mexico 146=146 (9*-9) to accomplish a unique achievement during the season’s inaugural international showcase. It also equalled her performance from the previous year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, where the 27-year-old archer from Vijayawada won three gold medals in mixed, women, and solo competitions.
India demonstrated their dominance in the non-Olympic compound category during the morning session, winning the men’s team, women’s team, and mixed team events—two of which featured Jyothi—to complete a perfect sweep of the team events.
In the women’s compound team event, Jyothi, Aditi Swami, and Parneet Kaur defeated Italy 236-225, opening their account with a gold medal. They only dropped four points.
