In their second match of the ongoing Asian Games 2023, India defeated Bangladesh by a score of 1-0 on Thursday at the Xiaoshan Sports Centre in Hangzhou. After losing 1-5 to China in their Group A opening, the victory helped India turn around their campaign. India had numerous chances to score in the first half but failed to do so. In particular, Mitul, the custodian for the opponent, made three saves. After a Samuel Kynshi free kick was deflected against the crossbar in the second half, it appeared that the game would end scoreless. Left winger Bryce Miranda, though, got a long pass on the edge of the opponent’s box in the 85th minute. Rahmat Mia, the captain of Bangladesh, fouled the winger, and India was given a penalty. India gained a late 1-0 lead as captain Sunil Chhetri stepped up and buried the ball into the bottom-left corner. A critical victory for Igor Stimac’s team allowed them to maintain their advantage and advance to the knockout rounds.
