India made history in Hangzhou, China, in the Asian Para Games 2023, finishing with a record-breaking 111 medals. With more than 72 medals in 2018, India broke its own record with 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze. India came in fifth overall, which is also their best-ever ranking on the scoreboard. With 29 gold medals, the Indian contingent set a new record; in 2014, they managed just three golds. This year, India swept the discus throw F54/55/56, club throw F51, javelin throw F46, and quick chess events. In the meantime, India won two medals in 19 different competitions (10 in shooting, 1 in powerlifting, 7 in badminton, and 10 in athletics). In the meantime, para rowing, para taekwondo, and para canoe all saw first-ever medals.
Out of the 111 medals won by the Indian team in Hangzhou, women made up 37% of the team. Six world records, thirteen Asian records, and fifteen Para Asian Games records were also set by Indian athletes.
In only its fourth edition, India achieved a significant milestone by breaking the 100-medal record at the Para Asian Games. They won more than they did in 2018, when they took home 15 gold, 24 silver, and 33 bronze. India won 17 medals total on Friday, including seven gold, six silver, and four bronze. Sheetal Devi won the gold in the open compound archery event to start the day, and Dharmaraj Solairaj took first place in the men’s T-64 long jump competition with a 6.80-meter leap.
