Bindyarani Devi wins India’s first ever medal at Weightlifting World Cup

Bindyarani Devi, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medalist, earned bronze at the IWF World Cup 2024, which took place on April 2, 2024, in Phuket, Thailand. Mirabai Chanu, the silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, finished 12th in the 49 kg weightlifting category. Despite not earning a medal at the World Cup, Mirabai Chanu became the sole Indian weightlifter to qualify for the Paris Olympics in 2024. Bindyarani Devi and Mirabai Chanu were the only two Indians competing at the IWF World Cup 2024. Bindyarani Devi, a 25-year-old competing in the women’s 55 kg category, lifted 196 kg.It featured 83 kg snatch and 113 kg clean and jerk) to win the bronze medal.

This was less than her 203 kg effort at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she won the silver medal.

North Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong won the gold medal with a lift of 234 kg, while Mihaela Cambei of Romania took silver.
