German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced on Friday that Germany has formed an eight-person commission to review the attack on Israeli athletes and team members at the 1972 Munich Olympics in order to address any outstanding issues. The project is a component of a larger government initiative to work towards rapprochement with the impacted families, which also includes a $30.67 million ($28.6 million) in compensation. On September 5, 1972, Palestinian militants from the Black September gang kidnapped members of the Israeli Olympic team. After the bombings, the Games went on as scheduled in 1972, and it took the IOC over 50 years to grant families’ pleas for an official act of memory at an Olympic event.
