Eritrean Biniam Girmay won a reduced group sprint at the end of the third stage, making history as the first Black African rider to win a stage in the Tour de France. At the 2022 Giro d’Italia, Girmay—who had previously become the first Black African to win a grand tour stage—perfectly timed his attempt to defeat Belgian Arnaud de Lie and Colombian Fernando Gaviria, who finished second and third, respectively.
Richard Carapaz of Ecuador won the yellow jersey for overall leader. With 2.3 kilometres remaining in the stage, Belgian Jasper Philipsen, the pre-race favourite, was engaged in a massive collision.
