Greatness meets Greatness: Virat Kohli ties Tendulkar’s record with his 49th ODI century

Virat Kohli of India has tied Sachin Tendulkar’s world record with his 49th one-day international (ODI) century.

In an important encounter in the ICC Cricket World Cup in Kolkata against South Africa, Kohli accomplished the feat. With his record-equalling century on the day of his 35th birthday, the former skipper of India has amassed almost 13,000 runs in the format. In 277 ODI innings—which included 70 half-centuries—he achieved the milestone.

With 31 centuries to his name, current skipper Rohit Sharma is the next batsman on the list of most ODI centuries. India’s top run scorer, Virat Kohli, helped his team set a goal of 327 runs for South Africa in their top-of-the-table match. Later on, India managed to win the match by a massive 243 runs with Ravindra Jadeja taking 5-wickets.

 

He put together a valiant innings on a turning pitch in sweltering heat, scoring 101 runs off 127 balls and hitting ten fours.

When Kohli reached 90 runs, the Eden Gardens crowd stood up and applauded each additional run. The largely Indian crowd cheered as he scored a strike on 99, and thousands of cameras flashed to capture the historic moment.
