After scoring against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal, Antoine Griezmann overtook Luis Aragonés as Atletico Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with 174 goals. In the 37th minute, Griezmann scored the game’s first goal with a low right-footed effort from outside the box after deftly sidestepping defenders with a clever move.
The goal brought the score at 2-2. Madrid prevailed in extra time, 5-3. Griezmann required 368 games with the team to attain his milestone, whereas Aragonés needed 370 games.
Ever after tying Aragonés with two goals against Getafe in the Spanish league in December, Griezmann has not scored in three straight games. The France international is in his eight season with Atletico. He served with the team for the first time from 2014 to 2019 before moving to Barcelona, where he spent two largely forgettable seasons. On a one-year loan that was extended until the 2022–2023 season, he returned to Atletico in 2021. Griezmann was subsequently able to play more minutes for Diego Simeone’s team after Atletico and Barcelona came to an agreement to sign him.
The 32-year-old forward’s options had been restricted by a contract disagreement between the clubs, according to which Atletico would have had to pay Barcelona 40 million euros ($43.8 million) if his playing time exceeded a certain threshold.
