In classical chess, Karthikeyan Murali becomes the third Indian to defeat Magnus Carlsen

Karthikeyan Murali of India became just the third player in the history of the game to defeat world chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

Playing with the black pieces in the seventh round of the ongoing Qatar Masters, the 24-year-old Indian managed to overcome Carlsen. After Harikrishna, who beat the Norwegian in 2005, and Viswanathan Anand, the only other player from India to have beaten Carlsen, Murali became the third Indian to do so with his victory over the Norwegian.

With a score of 5.5 out of 7, Murali’s victory brought him into the top group, which included players like Arjun Erigaisi and SL Narayan of India.
