Weightlifter Gurdeep Singh, who won bronze at the Commonwealth Games, came in 21st place in the men’s +109kg competition at the World Championships. The 27-year-old lifted 350 kg (145 kg + 205 kg) while competing in Group C, a staggering 40 kg less than his bronze medal-winning effort at the CWG in August of last year. The great lifter Mirabai Chanu brought back two medals for India from the competition. In the women’s 49kg competition last week, the former world champion took home two silver medals: one for her overall performance and one in the clean and jerk category. The weightlifting competitions at the 2024 Paris Olympics will be reduced from 14 during the Tokyo Games to 10 after the 2022 World Championship. However, because it is an optional supplementary event, the lifters have been careful not to overextend themselves.
