After defeating AC Milan 2-1 to take a commanding lead at the top of the table, Inter Milan emerged victorious in Serie A on Monday. With five games left in the season, Inter has a 17-point lead over Milan, their closest rivals, thanks to goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram. This is Inter’s 20th league title. In a chilly and pouring rainy evening at the San Siro, Simone Inzaghi secured his first league title as a manager.
A small group of Inter’s “away” supporters, numbering in the seventy-five thousand, cheered when the final whistle blew. With 10 minutes remaining, Fikayo Tomori grabbed one back for Milan, but Inter held out to start a title celebration. Milan made a fight out of it in the closing seconds.
After Juventus, who lead the race with 36 league victories, Inter is the second team in Italy to achieve 20 league titles. They will also have a second star embroidered on their jersey. By winning the Milan derby, Inzaghi’s club became the first to claim the title and destroyed the rest of the division.
After Milan faded away in the autumn and relegation-bound Napoli crashing and burning early in the season, Inter sprinted out into the distance at the start of the new year.
Juventus appeared to be fighting, but they fell apart in February right as Inter began a 13-game winning streak, giving them hope of replicating a successful run in the Champions League.
Inter was unable to complete that task as Atletico Madrid eliminated them from the Champions League in the middle of March, but the damage had already been done domestically by then.
The future appears bright as well, with contracts expected to be renewed by Italy’s Nicolo Barella, captain Lautaro Martinez, and Inzaghi, as well as increasing revenue and astute transfer market manoeuvres helping to lessen the financial damage caused by the Covid-29 outbreak. During the offseason, Piotr Zielinski and Medhi Taremi, who are free agents from Napoli and Porto, will join, but Marcus Thuram and other major names should remain.
