IPL 2024: SRHvMI : Records tumble as Sunrisers beat Mumbai in a run fest

The Sunrisers Hyderabad scored a record-breaking 277-3 before earning an often-tense 31-run victory over the Mumbai Indians in their IPL match at the Rajiv Ghandi International Stadium in Hyderabad. A thrilling, apparently impossible run chase saw Mumbai reach 50-0 in three overs and keep the tempo throughout before succumbing to 246-5 in the tournament’s first 500-run game in 17 years.

Heinrich Klaasen smashed an incredible 80 not out from just 34 balls in a record-breaking, almost unbelievable SRH innings after being asked to bat first, but unlike the previous record total of 263 in which Chris Gayle hit 175, this time it was very much a team effort.

Four of the top five batters contributed to the record, including Aiden Markram (42* from 28 balls), who had an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 116 with Klaasen, who hit seven sixes and four fours in his mind-numbing performance.

Australian opener Travis Head (62 from 24 balls) and Abhishek Sharma (63 from 23 balls) both had strike rates in excess of 250 to start the roller-coaster, which the South African duo kept going.

Mumbai’s 17-year-old Kwena Maphaka had a horrific start, being blasted for a pair of legside fours and sixes by Head in his second over, costing 22 runs.

Gerald Coetzee’s first over was particularly destructive, as he began with a waist-high no ball, which Sharma smacked for six and allowed 23 runs.
