Jannik Sinner captured his second Grand Slam title of 2024 by defeating Taylor Fritz in the US Open final, ending a 21-year streak without an American male champion at the majors. The world No. 1 Sinner, who won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January, became the first Italian man to win in New York with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. This victory marked his 55th win of the season and his sixth title.
Sinner’s win comes as his 21-year-old rival, Carlos Alcaraz, has claimed the French Open and Wimbledon titles, bringing his Grand Slam total to four. Both players have established themselves as the dominant figures in tennis’s new generation.
Sinner started strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first set before Fritz fought back to level at 2-2. Fritz saved a break point in a grueling 23-shot rally during the fifth game but soon fell behind 4-3. Sinner capitalized with another break to win the first set after Fritz hit a backhand long.
Both players had been highly consistent throughout the tournament, dropping serve only 20 times combined over six rounds before the final. Fritz, the first American man to reach a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009, missed three break points in the first game of the third set.
Despite Sinner committing his fourth double fault of the match, giving Fritz a 4-3 lead, Sinner broke back in the 10th game while Fritz was serving for the set, taking the lead at 6-5. Sinner earned two championship points when Fritz missed a running forehand and secured the win when Fritz’s return went into the net.
