Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner moved to the French Open semifinals, just hours after it was announced that he would take the top spot in the world rankings. Sinner is aiming to win his second Grand Slam title.
Even though he didn’t realize it at the time, Sinner, the second seed, will be ranked number one regardless of the French Open results because reigning champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from his quarterfinal match due to a knee injury. With Djokovic out, 22-year-old Sinner will become the first Italian player to hold the top ranking since the ATP rankings began 51 years ago.
Sinner has an unbeaten record at Grand Slam events this year, but he might face a tougher challenge ahead. He could go up against fellow young star Carlos Alcaraz, who will play against Stefanos Tsitsipas next.
