Jiang Huihua of China destroyed Mirabai Chanu, who won the silver medal in the Olympics in Tokyo, by lifting 120 kg on Tuesday at the World Championships.
In the women’s 49kg clean and jerk event, Huihua successfully defended her World Championships title and broke Chanu’s previous record of 119kg, which the Indian had set at the 2021 Asian Championships.
As she lifted 215 kg, two kilogrammes more than the previous world record (213 kg) held by her compatriot and reigning Olympic champion Hou Zhihui, the Chinese lifter also set a new record for the total lift.
Huihua won the prestigious competition by snatching 95 kg. Zhihui came in second at 211 kg (95 kg + 116 kg), and Jourdan Delacruz of the USA won bronze at 200 kg (88 kg + 116 kg).
