Jurgen Klopp creates history in Liverpool’s record-breaking Europa League win

In a competition in which the Premier League club last participated in the 2016 final, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp returns to face Austrian team LASK. The 2016 summit match was not particularly noteworthy for Klopp because, during his first campaign as Liverpool’s manager, the Merseyside-based team was defeated by Sevilla. But since then, a lot has changed. Under Klopp’s leadership, Liverpool has won the Champions League, advanced to the finals of the competition twice more, and also won the Premier League, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and Carabao Cup. As the first Liverpool manager to win 50 games in European football across all competitions, Klopp achieved a new record on Thursday. Rafael Benitez, the previous manager of Liverpool, and Klopp shared the record for most victories in Europe with 49 victories each between 2004 and 2010. Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, was hired in the middle of the 2015–16 campaign. The German led Liverpool to an eighth-place finish in the domestic league in his debut season as manager at Anfield. The Reds have not finished outside of the top four in the league since the 2016–17 Premier League season. The previous time, however, that streak was interrupted when Liverpool finished their Premier League campaign in fifth place.
