Jyothi Yarraji of India won gold in the women’s 60m hurdles at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran by breaking the national record. Harmilan Bains, a two-time Asian Games silver medalist, won India’s first gold in the women’s 1500m, clocking 4:29.55.

Yarraji ran 8.12 seconds in the finals, breaking her own national record and winning India’s second gold medal in the competition. This increased India’s gold medal total from last year, when Tajinderpal Singh Toor was the country’s only gold medalist.

Jyothi finished first in her heat, clocking 8.22 seconds, ahead of Japan’s Asuka Terada, who ran 8.21 seconds. Hong Kong’s Lui Lai Yiu finished third in 8.26 seconds. The 24-year-old Indian is the current Asian Outdoor champion in the 100m hurdles, having won in Bangkok last year. After being disqualified in the 100m hurdles at the Hangzhou Asian Games, she returned with a silver medal.
