Makhachev beats Poirier to defend UFC lightweight title

Islam Makhachev defeated Dustin Poirier via submission in the fifth round of UFC 302, retaining his lightweight title and extending his winning streak to 14, the third-longest in UFC history. This victory brought Makhachev’s record to 26-1. He hinted at moving up in weight for his next fight, having defended his title at 155 pounds for the third time.
Dustin Poirier, now 30-9, failed in his third attempt to win the undisputed title, with all three losses coming by submission. At 35, Poirier is considering retirement.
