Both sides stated that the McLaren Formula One team will employ Mercedes power units until at least 2030, after extending their existing agreement into the sport’s new engine age, which begins in 2026.
McLaren, driven by Lando Norris of the United Kingdom and Oscar Piastri of Australia, is the first customer team to commit to the new Mercedes power unit alongside the works team.
McLaren sits fourth in the constructors’ standings, ahead of Aston Martin, who will transition from Mercedes engines to Honda engines in 2026.
Mercedes also powers Williams, but the new engine age will see the number of manufacturers expand from four to seven, with Audi joining in 2026 and Red Bull beginning a new alliance with Ford.
General Motors has legally registered with the governing FIA to supply engines for a potential Andretti Cadillac squad beginning in 2028.
Starting in 2026, the new power units will be 50% internal combustion and 50% electric, with a maximum output of more than 1,000 horsepower and 100% sustainable fuel.
