Mumbai won its 42nd Ranji Trophy title, defeating Vidarbha by 169 runs on the final day of the 2024 season. Chasing a challenging 538-run goal, Vidarbha put up a valiant fight, with captain Akshay Wadkar striking a century, but Mumbai spinners ensured they were bowled out for 368.
This was Mumbai’s first title triumph in eight years, following Aditya Tare’s success in the 2015-16 season. Vidarbha, on the other side, suffered their first defeat in a Ranji final while playing in their third.
Youn upstart Musheer Khan was Mumbai’s star performance, scoring 136 runs off 326 balls in the second innings, while Shreyas Iyer contributed 95 runs to Mumbai’s second innings total of 418, helping Mumbai set Vidarbha a massive aim of 538 runs. However, Vidarbha did not give up easily. Karun Nair scored 74, followed by skipper Akshay Wadkhar (102) and Harsh Dubey (65), who made Mumbai sweat, but spinner Tanush Kotian’s dismissal of Wadkar clinched the deal.
Kotian finished the final with a total of seven wickets. Shardul made an important contribution with the bat in Mumbai’s first innings, scoring 75 off 69 balls.
Musheer rolled his arms over in the second innings, taking the important wickets of Vidarbha’s number three and four, Nair and Aman Mokhade.
