National Wrestling Championship 2024: Vinesh Phogat wins gold on comeback

Two-time World Championships winner Vinesh Phogat returned to the mat after a 16-month-long injury absence to claim the women’s 55kg freestyle gold medal at the Senior National Wrestling Championships 2024 at the Railway Stadium in Jaipur.

Vinesh, 29, last participated in the 2022 World Championships in Belgrade, where she finished third in the 53kg division. Last year, she was unable to compete at the Asian Games due to a knee injury.

Vinesh defeated teenager Jyoti 4-0 in the finals to win the 55kg event at the 2024 National Wrestling Championships.

At the senior nationals, the star Indian wrestler competed in both a higher weight division and a non-Olympic weight group. Vinesh underwent knee surgery in August of last year and returned to training only in December.
