North Korean Kim Il Gyong breaks world record in weightlifting

On its four-year hiatus from international competition, North Korea continued to dominate at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Kim Il Gyong won the gold medal in the women’s 59kg division by setting a new snatch record of 111kg. Kim Il Gyong appears to have last participated in an international competition as a 14-year-old junior in 2018. The 20-year-old finished with a 246kg total after lifting 135kg in the clean and jerk, beating off previous world record holder in the snatch Kuo Hsing-chun of Taiwan for third place. Luo Shifang of China took second place.
