Real Madrid won their 36th La Liga title, tying a record, after their rival Barcelona lost to Girona with a score of 4-2. Real Madrid secured their victory earlier in the day by beating Cádiz 3-0. With only four games left in the season, Barcelona needed an almost impossible win to keep their slim chances of winning the championship alive.
At first, it seemed like Barcelona might delay Real Madrid’s victory for another week. They were leading 2-1 at halftime thanks to goals from Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christiansen, with great saves from their goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
But in the second half, Barcelona missed several chances, and Girona turned the game around. Cristian Portu scored in the 65th minute to put Girona ahead, followed by Miguel Gutiérrez’s goal just a minute later. Portu sealed the victory with an impressive volley from outside the box. This loss confirmed Real Madrid as the champions.
