At the Atlanta City Games, South African Akani Simbine won the 100 meters with a time of 9.90 seconds, the fastest in the world this year. He ran against a headwind and finished just ahead of Kenyan Ferdinand Omanyala, with American Kendal Williams coming in third at 10.05 seconds. Simbine’s time broke the previous record set by American Christian Miller in April by three hundredths of a second.
The event, held partly in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, featured an improvised straightaway course. American Noah Lyles excelled in the rarely-run 150 meters, finishing a full second ahead of Britain’s Zharnel Hughes. Lyles, a world champion in the 100 and 200 meters, has had a busy 2024, competing in the 100 meters at the Bermuda Grand Prix in April and the World Relays in the Bahamas earlier this month.
