The Rotterdam championship may pale in comparison to winning the Australian Open Grand Slam, but Jannik Sinner said his success in the ATP 500 event was still significant to him after the Italian moved to a career high of No. 3 in the world.
Sinner, who won his first major at Melbourne Park by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final, extended his winning streak in 2024 to 12 matches with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Alex de Minaur in the Rotterdam final. The 22-year-old’s second prize of the season will propel him over Medvedev to No. 3 when the rankings are updated later. Sinner will attempt to build pace on world No. 2 and defending Indian Wells champion Carlos Alcaraz at the hardcourt tournament next month.
De Minaur, seeded fifth, had not beaten Sinner in six previous efforts, but he came into the match in top form and battled toe-to-toe with him in the early exchanges.
Sinner’s consistency and power from both wings ultimately penetrated De Minaur’s defence, and the Italian broke serve at 2-2 following some thrilling rallies. Sinner will attempt to build pace on world No. 2 and defending Indian Wells champion Carlos Alcaraz at the hardcourt tournament next month.
