Aitana Bonmatí, a midfielder for Barcelona and Spain, won the Ballon d’Or Féminin following a record-breaking season for both club and country.
Before leading Spain to World Cup triumph in the summer, Bonmatí, 25, assisted Barça in winning Liga F and the Champions League the previous season. She was just voted UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, having previously won Player of the Tournament in both Australia and New Zealand. Sam Kerr of Australia and Salma Paralluelo of Spain were beaten by Bonmati to win the Ballon d’Or.
For the third consecutive year, a player from Barça has won the Ballon d’Or in the women’s division. Bonmatí takes the title from teammate and previous winner Alexia Putellas. After making his debut with Barça in 2016, Bonmatí has played in over 200 games and won four league titles, two Champions Leagues, five Copas de le Reina, and three Spanish Super Cups. After making her Spain debut in 2017, she had accrued 57 caps and 21 goals for her nation.
