Murali Sreeshankar of India won the gold medal in the long jump at the MVA High Performance Athletics Meet 1 in Chula Vista, California, with a leap of 8.29 metres.
The 24-year-old, who had won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, was just competing in his second event of the season when he put out a commendable performance that was just 0.07m off his personal best of 8.36m set last year.
Ma Weidong of China won the silver medal with a leap of 7.99 metres, and fellow countryman Huafeng Huang won the bronze with a leap of 7.61 metres.
Sreeshankar’s effort above the 8.25m qualifying mark for the 2023 World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Budapest this August, but it wasn’t taken into account because the tailwinds were too strong. At the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru earlier this month, Sreeshankar jumped 7.94 metres.
