Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won the women’s welterweight gold medal on August 10 with a unanimous points decision against China’s Yang Liu. The 25-year-old claimed the gold in the welterweight category (maximum 66 kilos or 145 pounds) after enduring intense scrutiny throughout the competition. The gold medal fight marked the end of Khelif’s nine-day journey through the Olympic tournament, which began in an unusual way. Her first opponent, Italy’s Angela Carini, withdrew from their bout after just 46 seconds, citing too much pain from Khelif’s punches.
