Summer McIntosh breaks her own world record in 400 IM

During the Canadian Olympic trials, 17-year-old Summer McIntosh set a new world record in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4 minutes, 24.38 seconds. This was over 1.5 seconds faster than her previous record of 4:25.87 set at last year’s world championship trials, also held at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. Midway through the race, McIntosh, a two-time world champion in the 400 IM, was slightly behind world record pace but sped up during the breaststroke leg, gaining a two-second lead with 100 meters left. Throughout the trials, McIntosh also won the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle events.
