Iga Swiatek avenged her Wimbledon defeat to Elina Svitolina with a dominant 6-1 6-4 victory, advancing to the Dubai quarterfinals.
The Polish world number one, who won her third consecutive Doha title on Saturday, took one hour and 23 minutes to defeat the 20th-ranked Svitolina, who recovered from a back injury suffered at last month’s Australian Open. Swiatek, who finished second in Dubai a year ago, now awaits the winner of Zheng Qinwen’s late-round match against Anastasia Potapova.
Meanwhile, US Open winner Coco Gauff ended Karolina Pliskova’s 11-match winning streak with a hard-fought 2-6 6-4 6-3 win, advancing to her second consecutive Dubai quarterfinal. Gauff had a lengthy altercation with chair umpire Pierre Bacchi late in the second set, but she did not let it derail her as she advanced to a match against Anna Kalinskaya in the final eight.
