Vidit wins the FIDE Grand Swiss and advances to the Candidates 2024 tournament

Vidit Gujrathi of India defeated Serbia’s Alexandr Predke in the 11th round to win the FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 on the Isle of Man (UK) with 8.5 points.

 

Vidit has also been invited to compete in the renowned Candidates tournament, which will be held in Canada in 2024. After R. Praggnandhaa, he became the second Indian to qualify for this tournament. Vidit had a disastrous start to the tournament. Vidit won seven games and drew three to finish with 8.5 points in 11 rounds after losing the first round to Dutch GM Erwin l’Ami.

Six of the eight players have been chosen for the prestigious Candidates event. Russia’s Ian Nepomniatchi, a 2022 World Champion finalist, earned direct entry, while Praggnanandhaa, Azerbaijan’s Nijat Abasov, and the United States’ Fabiano Caruana finished in the top four of the World Cup 2023 to qualify.
