The Turkish football federation announced Vincenzo Montella’s appointment as head coach on Thursday, one day after German Stefan Kuntz was fired. His goal will be to get Turkey into the Germany-hosted Euro 2024 tournament.
Kuntz, who took over in September 2021, was fired on Wednesday following a 4-2 friendly loss to Japan and a 1-1 home game with Armenia, which put Turkey second behind Croatia in Group D of the Euro qualifiers after goal differential. The 49-year-old Montella was a winger who spent the majority of his career at Sampdoria and Roma, where he won the Serie A in 2001. He has managed Roma, AC Milan, and Sampdoria in addition to coaching Sevilla and Fiorentina to national cup finals.
