Vondrousova beat 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur in the final by rallying in each set to become the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon.
She finished the previous season rated merely 99th after missing the entire season from April to October. The last unseeded woman to even make it to the All England Club final was 1963 runner-up Billie Jean King, who was seated in the front row of the Royal Box on Saturday with Kate, the Princess of Wales. She came at Wimbledon in 42nd place.
In the final, Centre Court’s retractable roof was closed to protect spectators from the wind, which gusted to 20 mph (30 kph) outside. This may have helped Vondrousova’s fluid left-handed strokes regularly connect with their target. Her photos didn’t convey the same level of intensity that Jabeur’s did.
As a teenager, Vondrousova lost in the 2019 French Open final. She fell behind in both sets this afternoon but won the final four games of the first and the final three games of the second.
When Vondrousova reached to put away a volley to conclude the match, she fell to the ground, laid on her back, covered her face with her hands, and appeared to be the happiest she had ever been on the ground.
