Ten years after her initial victory in the race, Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte won the women’s 100m breaststroke championship once more at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on Tuesday.
Meilutyte stole the show on Tuesday, but fellow Lithuanian Ryan Murphy won the men’s 100m backstroke, while American swimming sensation Katie Ledecky won her fifth 1500m freestyle gold on a busy day in Japan.
The 26-year-old Meilutyte touched in one minute, 4.62 seconds, demonstrating that she is prepared to return for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after experiencing success in the 2013 world championships in Barcelona.
Meilutyte became well-known after she won an event at the 2012 London Olympics at the age of 15. Since then, she has only participated in one Olympic competition, placing seventh in Rio in 2016.
Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa, who won the 200-meter race and earned a silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, came in second with a time of 1:05.84, and Olympic champion Lydia Jacoby of the United States grabbed third in a time of 1:05.94, according to Xinhua.
