World Athletics Championship: Noah Lyles sprints to 100m gold

At the track and field world championships, Lyles won the men’s 100-meter event with a time of 9.83. Lyles had a poor start, but with 40 metres left, he overtook his competitors and kept the lead all the way to the finish line to win the gold.

Letsile Tebogo, 20, of Botswana won silver in a photo finish against Briton Zharnel Hughes, who was born in Anguilla, in 9.88 seconds.

Lyles has already won the 200m world championship twice. And he can now formally add a 100-meter world championship to his resume.

Lyles’ victory became the fourth straight American men’s 100-meter gold medal, including Justin Gatlin in London in 2017, Christian Coleman in Doha two years later, and Fred Kerley in Eugene the previous year.

The 200-meter final for men is set for Friday, August 25. While on August 26, the men’s 4×100-meter final will take place.
