Indian wrestler Sangeeta Phogat defeated Viktoria Borsos of Hungary in the third-to-fourth place match on Saturday to take home the bronze medal in the 59kg division at the Polyák Imre & Varga János Memorial Ranking Series wrestling event in Budapest, Hungary.
Sangeeta, who is the sister of Geeta Phogat, who won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, and the wife of Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia, advanced to the semifinals through the repechage stages after beginning her campaign with a humiliating loss by fall to Jennifer Page Rogers of the United States.
In the third round, she defeated another American wrestler, Brenda Olivia Reyna, 12-2 to win by technical superiority (VSU1). Sangeeta launched an offensive right away, quickly building a 4-2 lead before prevailing via technical supremacy. Sangeeta qualified for the semifinals thanks to her victory in the third round, however she was unable to go to the final.
Sangeeta was defeated 4-6 by Poland’s Magdalena Urszula Gloder in the semifinals, but she came back to win the bronze medal in the third-and-fourth place match.
