Yamashita is one of the first female officials at the Asian Cup for men

After working in Qatar for the men’s World Cup last year, referee Yoshimi Yamashita will return there in January to make more history in the men’s Asian Cup. The Asian Football Confederation selected five female match officials, including two referees, to work in Qatar on Thursday. Yamashita is one of them. The competition lasts from January 12 through February 10.For its premier men’s event, the AFC has chosen female match officials for the first time. Yamashita worked as the fourth official for six group games at the men’s World Cup. The 24-team Asian Cup will be contested in many of the same grounds. FIFA selected Yamashita as one of three female referees for the World Cup for men. While working the Germany-Costa Rica game during the group stage, Stephanie Frappert of France made history. Yamashita oversaw the first all-female match official team for a match in the J-League, Japan’s top league, in April.
